Osteopathy for Children & Teenagers
As a family run Osteopathy clinic we treat generations of patients and support our baby patients into their teen years and beyond. We offer Osteopathy for Children & teenagers as it's through these younger years that a child's body changes the most it may ever through their entire life.
As babies and toddlers much change happens which mostly they aren't even aware of! However those older teen years can often be the most challenging as the child experiences change of the body they once knew in every single way. From the way their bodies function, look, feel and even smell. There is a lot for them to adapt to in a short amount of time considering the amount of change which takes place which can be very overwhelming for them. Our team at The Backbone Osteopathy Clinic help to make this transition as comfortable as physically possible by offering Osteopathy for children & teenagers which is focussed on helping create more balance within their quickly changing body on a muscular, postural and physiological level.
Common symptoms that we see our children & teenager patients present with at our clinics are:

- Neck pain.

- Muscle spasm, cramps or strains.

What are the benefits of Osteopathy for Children & Teenagers?
Our team of Osteopaths work in three ways to help restore balance in your childs body and system.
Cranial Osteopathy works with the childs body’s involuntary mechanisms. By doing so we aim to help to restore a calming balance to natural biorhythms using a gentle hands on approach and gentle massage of the childs skull and spine.
Visceral Osteopathy is a gentle hands on approach which works with the bodies organs (such as gut or stomach) aiming address these organs mobility within their natural body position to create more balance, relieve any structural tension, improve circulation all which allows for better function of the whole body system.
Structural Osteopathy is the most commonly known approach our team uses. With it we work with to diagnose and treat the dysfunctions in the musculoskeletal system.
What should I expect in my first session at The Backbone Osteopathy Clinics Southgate?
A detailed case history will be taken:
We will be asking your children a series of questions to give us a better picture of your childs condition. We ask that parents allow the child to answer the questions themselves without prompting their responses. We also ask that parents read through some of the nature of the questions that will be asked. Parents will be asked for input but it's valuable for us to hear the childs responses first. Questions will be asked regarding:
- Presenting symptoms, complaint and history and patterns of the symptoms.
- Medical history and other pre-existing health conditions.
- Reproductive health and where relevant menstrual history and sexual history.
- General Health: Diet, Sleep, feeding habits, activity levels, toilet habits, medical history.
- Medications or substances being used.
- Mental/ Emotional health.
An Assessment will be performed via:
- Observations (looking at standing posture and active movements)
- Passive Movement: orthopaedic tests, assessing the spinal mobility and joints, nerves and muscles where relevant.
- Palpation: feeling for areas of tension or discomfort in the body, muscles, abdomen.
Once a diagnosis has been reached a treatment plan will be put in place involving the Osteopathy/ hands on treatment and exercise program where necessary. Your Osteopath may also make other recommendations such as workstation set-up, sleep posture, dietary changes.
The Backbone Osteopathy Clinics Southgate & Muswell Hill team will always ensure that patients seek appropriate medical advice and treatment for themselves, their babies and infants alongside any Osteopathic treatment.
We will refer patients back to their GP if a problem is not suitable for Osteopathic treatment.
